The preliminary report of the Census of Population and Housing 2024 in Sri Lanka was conducted under the President’s order, with the enumeration stage running from October 2024 to 18th December 2024, followed by a revision round from 19th to 23rd December 2024. The census moment was set at midnight on 18th December 2024. Due to the complexity of Colombo and Gampaha districts, data collection in these urban areas extended until February 2025.
For the first time in Sri Lanka’s census history, data was collected using tablet computers and smartphones, with real-time transfer to the Department’s server system. The report includes key findings on population size, growth, and district-wise distribution, which will aid the government and institutions in policy-making and development planning.
This preliminary report has been submitted to His Excellency the President by the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. The final data will support critical decision-making for the nation’s future.
